What If It Does Work Out? Choosing to Stay Positive When Life Gets Messy
Let’s be real—sometimes life feels like one giant question mark.
You’re staring at a situation, unsure of what to do next, and your brain starts spinning with all the worst-case scenarios. “What if this fails?” “What if I mess it up?” “What if it doesn’t go the way I planned?”
Sound familiar? Yeah, me too.
But lately, I’ve been trying something different. Instead of only focusing on what could go wrong, I’m learning to also ask:
“What if it actually goes right?”
Sitting in the Uncertainty
I’m not going to pretend this is easy. When you’re in a tough spot—facing a decision, dealing with change, or waiting for clarity—your mind wants to protect you. And sometimes that means bracing for impact… just in case.
But constantly living in “what could go wrong” mode is exhausting. It’s like carrying an umbrella on a sunny day just in case it rains. You never get to enjoy the sunshine.
Looking at Both Sides
Here’s what I’ve been practicing:
When I’m stuck in my head, I write it all down—
-
What I’m afraid of
-
What could actually go right
-
What I can control
-
What I can’t
It helps me see the full picture instead of just the fear. Sometimes the worst-case scenario isn’t even that bad when I really look at it. And sometimes, the best-case scenario is better than I imagined.
It’s Not About Being Naive
Staying positive doesn’t mean ignoring the risks. It means giving yourself permission to believe in a good outcome, too. You can be realistic and optimistic at the same time. It’s a mindset shift—from “What if I fail?” to “What if I fly?”
Because here’s the truth:
Every hard thing has a positive possibility hidden inside it.
You just have to be willing to see it.
Final Thoughts
If you’re facing something uncertain right now, I hope this encourages you to slow down, take a breath, and give yourself permission to believe in something good. You don’t have to have it all figured out today. You just need to stay open to the idea that it could work out better than you expected.
So go ahead—ask yourself:
What if it all works out?
